Prasugrel may reduce cardiovascular events among patients managed medically after an angiogram for acute coronary syndrome

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A study has found that the anti-clotting medication prasugrel reduced cardiovascular events among patients who present with an acute coronary syndrome and are managed medically after an angiogram is performed to determine coronary anatomy. Results of the TRILOGY ACS trial, Angiographic Cohort were presented October 24 at the 24th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium.

Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin and a P2Y12 platelet inhibitor is beneficial in patients with unstable angina (UA) or non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Because a substantial fraction of these patients do not undergo revascularization after angiography, their optimal DAPT strategy is unknown.

The TRILOGY ACS trial compared prasugrel with aspirin versus clopidogrel with aspirin in the primary cohort of 7,243 UA/NSTEMI patients less than 75 years old who were medically managed without revascularization and had at least one high-risk criterion. The primary results of this study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology earlier this year, did not show any benefit for prasugrel with aspirin versus clopidogrel.

Patients were enrolled in 52 countries from June 2008 through September 2011 with median follow-up of 17 months. Those who weighed more than 60 kg were treated with a 10 mg maintenance dose of prasugrel versus 75 mg of clopidogrel; patients less than 60 kg received 5 mg of prasugrel.

Angiography was not required for enrollment, but if performed, evidence of coronary disease had to be demonstrated (at least one lesion > 30 percent stenosis or prior percutaneous coronary intervention/ coronary artery bypass graft surgery). Approximately 43% of the patients had angiography performed and coronary anatomy determined before being triaged to medical therapy. ?

Overall, in the TRILOGY ACS Trial, prasugrel did not reduce cardiovascular events among patients managed medically for ACS.

However, when treated with prasugrel compared to clopidogrel, patients who were triaged to medical therapy in the trial following angiography tended to have:

  • Lower rates of the combined endpoint of cardiovascular disease/heart attack/stroke
  • Lower rates of heart attack, stroke alone, and recurrent ischemic events
  • Higher rates of bleeding

"Though hypothesis-generating, these results are consistent with previous trials and suggest that when angiography is performed and coronary disease is confirmed, the benefits and risks of intensive antiplatelet therapy exist whether medical therapy or percutaneous coronary intervention is elected," said Stephen D. Wiviott, MD. Dr. Wiviott is a senior investigator with the TIMI Study Group, associate physician, Cardiovascular Division at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

The results of the TRILOGY ACS Angiographic Cohort trial will be presented on October 24 in Miami, Florida.

Twitter principles of social networking increase family success in nesting birds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? New research carried out by scientists at Universities in Exeter, France and Switzerland reveals for the first time the importance of social networking in producing a successful family.

The study found that, regardless of how big and healthy individual chicks are, what really matters to their chances of surviving and breeding is how siblings in the nest interact with each other, with cooperative families faring best.

Differences in patterns of feeding between mothers and fathers were a key factor in determining the behaviour of their offspring, according to the study published online October 23 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Mothers selected weaker, hungrier nestlings while fathers did the opposite, choosing those who were the most competitive.

Dr Nick Royle, from the University of Exeter, was involved in the study, alongside scientists from Universities in Toulouse, Bern and Basel. He said: "Whilst it is well-established that large, strong offspring are generally expected to be more successful than small, less well-nourished offspring, it has not been previously shown that the success of both individuals and families as a whole depends on the structure of social interactions among offspring."

"As any parent knows, parental care can be hard work and there is often a squeeze on the availability of resources in families. This sets the scene for conflicts of interest among family members over how these resources are allocated. Our study shows that the most successful families are those that are best at resolving these conflicts; parents and offspring that are most effective at responding to each other are the most successful."

Scientists from the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology & Conservation worked with colleagues from the Universities of Basel and Bern in Switzerland and the French Universit? Paul Sabatier alongside French scientific research organisation CNRS. It was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

63 broods of begging great tits breeding in nest boxes in woods around Bern in Switzerland were filmed when the nestlings were 10 days old, when both parents feed the young using different methods of selecting which nestlings receive food. The researchers examined the network of social interaction between the siblings, and then monitored the parents and their offspring to see whether they survived and went on to breed the following year.

Great tit mothers prefer to feed hungrier, smaller nestlings whereas fathers choose stronger, larger nestlings to feed. So in families where mothers provide most of the food, the young are more 'gregarious'. They moved around more and interacted more strongly with one another as the hungrier nestlings tried to move closer to their mothers to be fed. In broods where fathers fed more than mothers, nestlings moved around much less because the more competitive offspring took up the best positions near him.

Small and medium-sized broods fared better when the mother was the main feeder, whilst larger broods were more successful when the father provided most of the feeds. This could be because of constraints on space in larger families, making it harder for chicks to move around and jostle for position and easier to respond to fathers, with their simpler feeding rules, not mothers.

Dr Nick Royle concluded: "Users of Twitter will know that the more interactions they have, the more successful their profile is likely to be, and it's similar for nesting great tits; at least at nests where mothers provide most of the feeds. When fathers do most of the work offspring are much less gregarious. For young great tits social networking is related to the amount of physical contact each nestling has with their siblings, not the amount of tweeting they do. But using our social networks measure enabled us to demonstrate a novel link between how family members interact with one another and the success of those families."

"Our approach is not just applicable to social interactions in birds, however, or just for families. It could also be applied to understanding what patterns of social organisation best determine success between competing groups of humans, such as in business or team sports."

Merkel opens Roma Holocaust memorial in Berlin

Sean Gallup / Getty Images

Messina Weiss, 12 and great grand-daughter of Holocaust survivor Gertrud Rocher, carries a flower past the memorial to the Sinti and Roma in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Germany remembered the Holocaust's forgotten victims on Wednesday by opening a memorial in the heart of Berlin to the 500,000 ethnic Sinti and Roma murdered by the Nazis.

As the mournful strains of a solo violin sounded through the trees, political leaders and frail survivors approached a dark pool close to the German parliament building.

Its still water is intended to evoke tears for the dead but also, in reflecting the beholder, inspire new generations to protect minorities from hate.

"This memorial commemorates a group of victims who, for far too long, received far too little public recognition -- the many hundreds of thousands of Sinti and Roma who were persecuted by the Nazis as so-called gypsies," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.?"The destiny of every single person murdered in this genocide is one of unspeakable suffering. Every single destiny, fills us, fills me, with sadness and shame."

The memorial was designed by the Israeli artist Dani Karavan, the BBC reported, and a chronology of the Nazis' extermination campaign appears next to the memorial. A fresh flower will be placed on the triangular surface at the center of the reflecting pool every day, the BBC said.

Discrimination against Sinti and Roma increased at alarming levels once Adolf Hitler took power in 1933. They were sent to forced labor camps and, from 1934, subjected to forced sterilization as a result of the Nazis' "racial purity" laws.

Thomas Peter / Reuters

People lay flowers during the dedication of the memorial to the Sinti and Roma in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday.

By the start of World War II, the Nazis' genocidal intent became clear as Sinti and Roma were deported to death camps, where they wore uniforms bearing a "Z" for "Zigeuner" (the German word for "gypsy").

The first time a German leader recognized Nazi persecution of the Roma on racist grounds was in 1982, more than 30 years after West Germany acknowledged the murder of 6 million Jews and began to pay compensation to Israel.

Discrimination today
German politicians and Roma leaders at the opening ceremony described the memorial as a reminder of the urgent need to protect minorities today.

Many of Europe's 12 million Roma face discrimination and social exclusion, often living in dire poverty.

"Half a million Sinti and Roma, men, women and children, were murdered during the Holocaust. Society has learned nothing, next to nothing from this, otherwise they would treat us differently," said Dutch Sinto survivor Zoni Weisz.

His voice faltered as he described how, as a seven-year-old, he watched his father, mother, sisters and brother being deported in a train to Auschwitz concentration camp.

Merkel stressed it was a German and European duty to protect Roma rights. After her speech, a heckler highlighted that Germany refuses to grant asylum to Roma from countries such as Serbia and Macedonia, where they face discrimination.

Romani Rose, leader of the Central Council of Sinti and Roma in Germany, also attended the ceremony.

"Opening the memorial sends an important message to society that anti-Roma sentiment is as unacceptable as anti-Semitism," he told AFP.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Should I Sleep Keeps Your Mac Display Awake As Long As You're In Front of the Webcam

Should I Sleep Keeps Your Mac Display Awake As Long As You're In Front of the WebcamMac: It's always a bit annoying when you're reading a long article (or just spacing out) and your computer cuts to the screensaver because you haven't touched the mouse in a while. Should I Sleep is an app that keeps your display from going to sleep as long as you're sitting in front of it by using facial recognition.

Before your Mac goes to sleep (or to a screensaver), the app quickly checks your webcam to see if you're still sitting there. If you are, Should I Sleep prevents the computer from sleeping. It has notifications to let you know about this, but you can disable them in the preferences. Out of the box, that's all it does, but you can buy some in-app purchases to get more options, including detecting any motion from the camera, an external display, or sound activity. Still, the face detection alone works just fine, and it's free. If you find yourself constantly reaching for the mouse or keyboard before your display goes to sleep, Should I Sleep is a handy program to have around.

Broncos coach John Fox wants to let go of Stickum issue

The Broncos returned to work Monday after their bye but had one remaining item to address from the team's victory over San Diego last week.

Coach John Fox brushed aside an ongoing NFL investigation into whether the Chargers were using Stickum, or a similar banned adhesive, during the Oct. 15 game in San Diego. Stickum and similar products that are designed to improve a player's grip on the football have been banned since 1981.

An official, line judge Jeff Bergman, confiscated a cloth covered with an unknown substance during the game. The cloth was sent to the NFL.

"I'm not really all over that," Fox said Monday. "I'm sure the league has got their ways of dealing with it and will let us know the outcome. I believe

it is in the rule book."

Stickum is sold by many sporting goods suppliers, both on-line and in stores, in aerosol form, a paste and a powder.

The Chargers could lose one or more draft picks if the league determines a banned substance violation has occurred. San Diego will face the Broncos again Nov. 18 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The Chargers, tied at 3-3 with the Broncos atop the AFC West, also had a bye Sunday.

Remember when??The last time the Broncos faced the Saints, New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees threw for the sixth-highest yardage total by any opposing quarterback in Broncos history.

In a Sept. 21, 2008, meeting ? Mike Shanahan's last season in Denver ? Brees completed 39-of-48 passes for 421 yards and a touchdown. The Broncos also sacked Brees just once in that game, a 34-32 Denver victory after the Saints missed on a two-point conversion attempt with 10 minutes left in the game.

One of just two players in the current Broncos defense to play in that game, Elvis Dumervil was asked if the Saints' offense of 2011 bears any resemblance to 2008 since Brees still is behind center.

"Just a lot better, more experienced," Dumervil said.

The Saints had four players finish with at least 75 yards receiving in that game. Cornerback Champ Bailey is the other current Broncos defensive starter who played in that game.

Follow the rules. Fox routinely tells his players before the bye weekend he doesn't "want to read about them unless they won the lottery."

After a four-day weekend for the players ? Thursday through Sunday ? Fox said he felt like the team got back to business without a major stumble.

"I think we did well in that department, maybe not so well winning the lottery, but we didn't read about them," Fox said.

Footnotes.?Rookie linebacker Danny Trevathan had an excused absence from Monday's practice. ... Fox said cornerback Tracy Porter, who missed the Chargers game with what the Broncos described as an illness, was cleared for "noncontact" work Monday. ... Fox, a former Carolina coach, on the Panthers firing general manager Marty Hurney: "It's a tough business. We had some good moments, some very good moments there. Went to a Super Bowl, couple of championship games. It's unfortunate. I'm sure he'll do fine moving forward." Hurney was the team's general manager during Fox's nine-year run as the team's coach.

Backup strep throat testing may be unnecessary

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors don't need to double-check the results of a negative strep throat test because any missed cases typically don't result in additional health problems for patients, according to a new study.

Researchers found that among people with strep throat symptoms, an initial in-office test failed to detect the bacterial infection six percent of the time - but those oversights didn't lead to complications from the infection.

The findings support recent recommendations from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) that for adult patients, doctors can rely on the rapid test results alone to make treatment decisions.

"Though I'm confident in our review of the data to say we aren't allowing serious diseases to go untreated, it's reassuring that there were no severe (complications) in persons who had a negative rapid test, but had a positive (secondary) test" in this study, said Dr. Chris Van Beneden, an epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who helped develop the IDSA guidelines.

Many doctors still send out throat swabs for backup testing after an initially negative result. Double-checking office results using a more involved DNA test is also a standard recommendation of the Joint Commission, a healthcare accreditation organization.

The Joint Commission does, however, allow doctors to opt out of backup testing if they can analyze their own procedures and show that the first, rapid test is sufficiently accurate.

The purpose of double-checking negative tests is to make sure no cases go overlooked, because untreated strep throat can develop into serious problems, such as rheumatic fever.

But extra testing costs money, so researchers wanted to see how much was spent on the testing and how many health complications were avoided because of it.

Dr. Georges Nakhoul and Dr. John Hickner at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio collected medical records over a two-year period from 25,000 adult patients who had come to the clinic for a sore throat.

About 20,000 of the patients received an in-office strep test, and nearly 17,000 of those were negative.

The doctors sent a throat swab off for backup DNA testing for 15,500 patients, and 953 - or six percent - of those secondary tests came back positive.

No patients who were diagnosed based on the backup test developed complications related to their strep throat infection.

TOO MANY ANTIBIOTICS

Almost half of the 953 patients with a late diagnosis were prescribed antibiotics before the positive test result came back.

The other half received their prescription a couple of days after their initial doctor's visit - perhaps too late to be helpful anyway, Nakhoul said.

"By the time they got the call back from the physician to get the antibiotics, it's been two days. This is usually the window when the antibiotic is most effective... so we're not doing the patient any good," he told Reuters Health.

The results show backup testing didn't prevent any inappropriate use of antibiotics, the researchers reported in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Not only did many of the late-diagnosis patients get a prescription before the results of the second test came in, 45 percent of patients who had both a negative rapid test and a negative backup test also received antibiotics. Without a bacteria-related ailment, those drugs wouldn't be expected to do patients any good.

Over-prescription of antibiotics is a major public health concern, since any use of the drugs can contribute to resistance - making future infections much harder to treat.

"We know antibiotics are used inappropriately regardless of whether backup (testing) is used or not," Van Beneden told Reuters Health.

Each backup test costs patients or their insurance companies $113 at the Cleveland Clinic - which works out to a price tag of $1.7 million in this study alone.

Nakhoul said because none of the missed cases resulted in complications, the added expense isn't worth it.

For practices using an in-office rapid test, he said, "physicians should just believe the (test) and not do the second step."

Difference Between Enculturation and Acculturation: Enculturation ...

Enculturation vs Acculturation
?

Enculturation and acculturation are terms that are used in sociology and social anthropology, to explain different processes of absorption of cultural traits by the people. Both processes help in explaining socialization on individuals in a society. Enculturation helps a person living in a society imbibe and immerse social values of the culture that surrounds him. There is another term acculturation that is sometimes used for this very process and confuses many. There are subtle differences between enculturation and acculturation that will be highlighted in this article.

Enculturation

The process of socialization that helps a person to acquire social norms, values, behaviors, language and other tools of the culture that surrounds him in a society is labeled as enculturation. Much help in this process comes from parents, peers and siblings that provide the necessary push and pull to make a person learn what makes him socially more or better fit in his society. All people in the society learn about acceptable behaviors and the behaviors they need to avoid.

Acculturation

Acculturation is a process of socialization that takes place whenever there is a meeting of two different cultures. These changes taking place can be seen both at cultural as well as psychological levels. Both the cultures are affected with changes seen or felt in both cultures. The changes that can be seen easily are the changes in clothing, language, and customs or practices. However, despite claims by anthropologists and sociologists about acculturation being a two way process of change, there is proof to suggest that changes take place mostly in the norms and values apart from clothing and language of minorities living inside a country rather than affecting majority customs and traditions.

What is the difference between Enculturation and Acculturation?

? Both enculturation and acculturation are processes of socialization taking place in a society.

? Whereas enculturation is a process that helps an individual to imbibe social values, norms, customs etc. of the culture he lives in, acculturation is a two way change process that takes placed when there is a meeting of two cultures.

? In acculturation there are changes felt in both cultures though mostly it is the minority culture that gets changed by way of changed language, clothing, customs and practices.

? Enculturation helps an individual to survive and better fit into the culture he finds himself surrounded.

? No difference between the two terms is accepted in some countries where acculturation is considered as same as enculturation.

'Defiance' blends basic cable scifi TV, MMO FPS action when it launches in the spring

With shows like Battlestar Galactica, all of the Stargates and even Eureka on ice, where will Syfy go when it runs out of places and/or marginal celebrities to tell ghost stories about? One answer may be a show slated to debut next spring called Defiance, which will depict an Earth populated by humans and aliens alike trying to pick up the pieces after years of war between the two have left the planet in pieces. The twist here is that the show will run along concurrently with a massively multiplayer shooter being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from the makers of RIFT that takes place in the same world. The team behind it has been posting content about the making of both sides of the project recently (check out Massively by Joystiq's coverage for more info), as well as a trailer for the TV show, which you can check out after the break. We're not sure if this will go over with any more of a splash than Syfy's usual Saturday night monster-of-the-week flicks, but at least they're trying. We'll be keeping an eye out for this one in April one way or another because really what else would we do, watch Revolution?

Asian Markets - Business Insider

Markets are deep in the red early in the Asian trading session.

Japan's Nikkei is down 1.2 %.

Australia's S&P/ASX is down 0.9%.

Moments ago, Japan reported that its exports plunged 10.3 percent in September, which was worse than the 10.0 percent drop expected by economists.? Exports to China fell 14 percent? and exports to Europe tanked 26 percent.

U.S. futures are down just marginally, with Dow futures down 7 points.? This suggests much of today's selling is just Asia catching up to Friday when the Dow plunged 205 points.

My mother's land deal fair: Praveen Kumar - Real Estate India

??|?? October 21, 2012 ?? 10:34am ??|Contributed by manoja

GURGAON: Haryana Urban Development Authority ( HUDA) administrator Praveen Kumar said on Saturday that the land deal of his mother Krishna Kanta was fair and the family wasready for any probe in this regard.

Haryana?s whistleblower IAS officer, Ashok Khemka, had taken on Kumar for allegedly allowing partition and demarcation of panchayat land in favour of his mother at Ankhir village in Faridabad. Khemka had written to the government: ?The gram panchayat was not only divested of 5,870 kanal of land, its share amounting to 1,573 kanal and 12 marla was pushed to the less valuable outer region in the first partition proceedings.?

Praveen Kumar claimed that there was no wrongdoing in the deal. ?My mother had purchased around two acres of land from the shamlat (common land) belonging to certain people in 2005. When she applied for partition of her share from the shamlat land in 2008, I was not deputy commissioner of Faridabad. Next year, the revenue officer had allowed the partition of shamlat land deciding over 100 cases, including my mother?s application. The partition of shamlat land was completely as per law,? he said.

'The Sessions' review: sex-surrogate story works better in bed than in church

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - On paper, it sounds like a misguided collaboration between the Lifetime network and the Playboy Channel - a 36-year-old paralytic who spends most of his time in an iron lung hires a sex surrogate to help him lose his virginity. Based on a true story, to boot.

Miraculously, "The Sessions" avoids the kind of squickyness that Hollywood usually drizzles over its uplifting movies about the physically challenged, mainly because its subject, poet and journalist Mark O'Brien, was in real life far too smart and self-deprecating for that kind of sentimental head-patting. (Just watch Jessica Yu's extraordinary Oscar-winning short "Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien" for a sampling of the actual guy's wit and forthrightness.)

In this fictionalized film, we see some news footage of O'Brien zipping through a college campus on a motorized gurney before we're introduced to John Hawkes playing the writer. Assigned an article about "Sex and the Disabled," O'Brien soon realizes he's in way over his head, given that, for all his intellectual growth, he's still a virgin. (A childhood polio sufferer, O'Brien was unable to move anything below his neck although, as we learn soon enough, he was more than capable of erections and orgasms.)

Along comes sex therapist and surrogate Cheryl (Helen Hunt) to teach Mark about his own body, not to mention the bodies of women; she makes it clear from the get-go that he is limited to no more than six sessions with her and that she has very strict boundaries regarding her private life. As you might expect, however, those boundaries start wobbling a bit, as the married Cheryl finds herself having feelings for Mark, even as she acknowledges that his crush on her is classic patient-therapist transference.

Since the movie's not about Cheryl, and we don't know how her sessions with Mark are different than the ones she's had with previous clients, we have to take it on faith that Mark is so very special as to make this professional bend her own rules. It's something of a leap, but Hawkes' charismatic performance helps fill in the gaps of the screenplay by director Ben Lewin. (The Australia-based filmmaker was himself a childhood polio sufferer.)

Given the obvious physical challenges of the role, Hawkes creates a memorable performance whose subtle pleasures will no doubt be blown all out of proportion by awards-distributing bodies that admire quantifiable acting. Despite the trophy-attracting nature of the role, however, Hawkes admirably avoids showboating.

He's got great chemistry with his co-stars, particularly Moon Bloodgood (dryly amusing as one of Mark's caretakers) and Hunt. The Oscar-winning actress often reads peevish and irritated on the screen, as though she had been called into work on her day off. Her anti-charisma works in her favor here, giving the character a prickly base from which to blossom into this unlikely flirtation. (It may have helped that Hunt explored similar territory in 1992's "The Waterdance," another movie in which her character had a sexual relationship with a paraplegic.)

Hunt deserves a lot of credit for tackling the necessary physicality of the role, particularly since so many actors, both male and female, insist on no-nudity contracts that protect their modesty but take audiences out of the movie.

Think about it: When you see a passionate love scene in which a woman leaves her bra on, or a naked actor walking through a room where there is always a lamp or a bouquet of flowers to hide his genitals, it removes you from the moment and reminds you that you're watching actors acting. There's nothing prurient about Hunt's nudity here, and it keeps the sexual scenes organic and believable; hats off to her for caring more about the character and the movie than she does about the inevitable ubiquity of her breasts on the internet.

The power of Hawkes' scenes with Hunt and Bloodgood is worth mentioning because where "The Sessions" goes awry is in the many instances in which Mark pours out his heart to parish priest Father Brendan (William H. Macy). It's a clunky way to communicate Mark's innermost feelings about his sexual education, and the whole "He's talking to a priest! About sex!" gag gets tired pretty quickly.

Still, the rest of the movie works so effectively that it makes the many church-bound scenes worth enduring. Smart films about sex are as rare as intelligent cinematic explorations of the lives of the differently-abled, so for "The Sessions" to accomplish both so well makes it the movie equivalent of Halley's Comet; take a good look, because it might be decades before we get another one.

Many of us are aware of William Wyler?s classic film starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. Or, we have at least read ? or at the very least heard of ? the novel by Emily Bronte: Heathcliff and Cathy, friends since childhood, but perhaps doomed by their circumstances and their love.

Now, Andrea Arnold has remade the often told tale, but has stripped it of romanticism and lushness, turning it raw and often difficult to watch. Solomon Glave is the young, feisty Heathcliff, taken into a complicated home to become a servant. This is the first black Heathcliff we?ve seen, and he is a strong presence when he is allowed to be. Shannon Beer plays an earthy young Cathy. Director Arnold uses jump cuts, odd angles, handheld cameras, imagining this story of the 1880?s as cruel and probably realistic. There are graphic animal killings and torment. By going for such realism, all the magic and passion is lost. 1/2 hat.

Tropical collapse in Early Triassic caused by lethal heat: Extreme temperatures blamed for 'Dead Zone'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered why the 'broken world' following the worst extinction of all time lasted so long -- it was simply too hot to survive.

The end-Permian mass extinction, which occurred around 250 million years ago in the pre-dinosaur era, wiped out nearly all the world's species. Typically, a mass extinction is followed by a 'dead zone' during which new species are not seen for tens of thousands of years. In this case, the dead zone, during the Early Triassic period which followed, lasted for a perplexingly long period: five million years.

A study jointly led by the University of Leeds and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), in collaboration with the University of Erlangen-Nurnburg (Germany), shows the cause of this lengthy devastation was a temperature rise to lethal levels in the tropics: around 50-60?C on land, and 40?C at the sea-surface.

Lead author Yadong Sun, who is based in Leeds while completing a joint PhD in geology, says: "Global warming has long been linked to the end-Permian mass extinction, but this study is the first to show extreme temperatures kept life from re-starting in Equatorial latitudes for millions of years."

It is also the first study to show water temperatures close to the ocean's surface can reach 40?C -- a near-lethal value at which marine life dies and photosynthesis stops. Until now, climate modellers have assumed sea-surface temperatures cannot surpass 30?C. The findings may help us understand future climate change patterns.

The dead zone would have been a strange world -- very wet in the tropics but with almost nothing growing. No forests grew, only shrubs and ferns. No fish or marine reptiles were to be found in the tropics, only shellfish, and virtually no land animals existed because their high metabolic rate made it impossible to deal with the extreme temperatures. Only the polar regions provided a refuge from the baking heat.

Before the end-Permian mass extinction, Earth had teemed with plants and animals including primitive reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of sea creatures including coral and sea lillies.

This broken world scenario was caused by a breakdown in global carbon cycling. In normal circumstances, plants help regulate temperature by absorbing Co2 and burying it as dead plant matter. Without plants, levels of Co2 can rise unchecked, which causes temperatures to increase.

The study, published Oct. 19 in the journal Science, is the most detailed temperature record of this study period (252-247 million years ago) to date.

Sun and his colleagues collected data from 15,000 ancient conodonts (tiny teeth of extinct eel-like fishes) extracted from two tonnes of rocks from South China. Conodonts form a skeleton using oxygen. The isotopes of oxygen in skeletons are temperature controlled, so by studying the ratio of oxygen isotopes in the conodonts he was able to detect temperature levels hundreds of millions of years ago.

Professor Paul Wignall from the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, one of the study's co-authors, said: "Nobody has ever dared say that past climates attained these levels of heat. Hopefully future global warming won't get anywhere near temperatures of 250 million years ago, but if it does we have shown that it may take millions of years to recover."

The study is the latest collaboration in a 20-year research partnership between the University of Leeds and China University of Geosciences in Wuhan. It was funded by the Chinese Science Foundation.

That is the question behind a provocative new study from an influential Washington think tank.

True, retired veterans are private citizens. But there is a ?fine line? between vets voicing private concerns and doing so in a way ?that makes it appear that they?re speaking on behalf of the institution? of the US military, says Maj. James Golby, an instructor of politics at the US Military Academy at West Point.

The ?main issue? is ?respecting the moral authority that has been bestowed on people who have served in the military to guard? the trust the public has placed in them, adds Golby, lead author in the new study entitled, ?Military Campaigns: Veterans? Endorsements and Presidential Elections,? from the Center for a New American Security in Washington.

The problem is that very few American voters make the distinction between retired military personnel and those on active duty, notes the study, which was also written by Kyle Dropp and Peter Feaver. Active-duty personnel are not allowed to wear uniforms at political events and make political speeches.

The campaigns, in turn, are aware of this and tend to recruit the highest-ranking retirees they can find to support candidates, particularly ?flag officers? ? admirals and generals.

?Retired senior officers may think they are drawing fine distinctions between the formal institution of active-duty military and their own views as retired citizens, but the truth is that no one, especially not the campaigns, is very interested in their views as private citizens,? the study says.

While the report finds that these endorsements do not appear to notably sway voters, the problem is that over time these endorsements have the potential to erode trust in the military.

What's more, the topic is particularly relevant during a presidential election in which, for the first time in American history, neither of the candidates has served in the military.

?Endorsements by retired military officers can diminish the perception of the military as a nonpartisan institution serving the nation and increase the perception of the military as just another interest group serving its own bureaucratic and political interests,? the authors warn.

Because of this, endorsements from retired military officers ? particularly the high-ranking ones ? could be seen as coming with a thinly veiled threat about what could happen if the nonpreferred candidate wins.

This is particularly true of some of the negative political ads this campaign season, when retired Special Operations Forces officers attacked President Obama for discussing the strike on Osama bin Laden?s compound, Golby says.

?The real downside to negative ads is that they do create a perception that the military doesn?t support one candidate, and they raise questions about whether military leaders will be able to faithfully carry out the orders of the other party,? he says.

As the report notes, ?Indeed, the military is obliged to serve wholeheartedly whichever candidate wins, and public participation in the campaign process undermines the perception that it can or will do so if the vote goes against members? preferences.?

For this reason, the nation?s highest-ranking military officer, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has weighed in on the issue.

?In my judgment, we must continue to be thoughtful about how our actions and opinions reflect on the profession beyond active service,? he wrote in a message to US troops. ?Former and retired service members, especially generals and admirals, are connected to military service for life. When the title or uniform is used for partisan purposes, it can erode the trust relationship.?

The report?s authors acknowledge that the vast majority of retired officers who make endorsements have only the interests of their country at heart. ?Many of these retired generals and admirals have served their nation faithfully for many years and have noble ambitions. They are pursuing what they think is right in terms of broader policies for the nation,? Golby says.

What?s more, veterans groups have legitimate concerns about issues that elected officials address ? or choose not to ? after having ?born the brunt? of America?s two wars for a decade, he notes, adding that no one is suggesting that veterans forgo voting.

The key may be weighing these endorsements ? particularly among high-profile, high-ranking officers ? against the greater good for the nation. In any event, "the message of such endorsements is clear and unmistakable," the report concludes. '' 'I am a distinguished military voice speaking on behalf of the military. Because ?we the military? trust this person to be commander-in-chief, you can, too.' "

Food Poisoning Injuries ? PersonalInjuryClaimsBlawg

Food Poisoning Injuries

Food poisoning injuries are a growing epidemic in the United States. Many food producers have become less vigilant about food safety, and some restaurants and people who prepare food are also notorious for failing to adhere to food safety laws and regulations. Food poisoning injuries can be extremely dangerous to pregnant women, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, people with diabetes and children. The Center for Disease Control tracks millions of cases of food poisoning each year, and statistics show that thousands of people are hospitalized every year because of food poisoning injuries.

Restaurant Food Poisoning Injuries

Many restaurant food poisoning injuries are minor, but with the high volume of food poisoning injuries, this still translates to thousands of people hospitalized every year due to food poisoning. Restaurant food poisoning injuries are absolutely unacceptable. Regulations on the food service industry are designed to protect consumers by dictating the temperature at which food must be stored, how food must be safely prepared, and cleanliness measures to prevent cross-contamination.

However, some restaurants show a clear disregard for these regulations, failing to take the necessary steps and causing diners to become ill. In some places, the fault lies with individual restaurant employees who are poorly trained or simply negligent. In any of these cases, negligence-related restaurant food poisoning injuries entitle you to a recovery.

Contaminated Food Presents Serious Risks

A more frightening and widespread risk is contaminated food. In the past several years, the FDA has announced several food recalls as a result of food contamination. Because of nationwide distribution techniques, contaminated food can easily travel around the country before cases of food poisoning injuries are reported and traced to a common source.

Even if you?re hundreds or thousands of miles from the source, you could still end up buying contaminated food in your local grocery store. Contaminated food cases are often the result of failure to adhere to FDA regulations. Negligence-related food contamination is unacceptable, and if you?ve suffered food poisoning injuries as a result of them, you may be entitled to a financial recovery. ?To seek this recovery contact an experienced attorney that specializes in injury cases in LA?for a free legal consultation.
