Graphene research gets ?21.5m fund

The Chancellor, George Osborne, has announced extra funding to develop the UK's research of the so-called "super-material" graphene.

It is one of the lightest yet strongest and most conductive materials known to man - and was originally discovered by scientists at Manchester University.

Now other universities will be asked to develop its commercial uses.

Mr Osborne said the ?21.5m investment fund would aim to take the technology from the lab to the factory floor.

He has previously pledged money for such research, including ?50m in 2011.

Graphene is made of sheets of carbon just one atom thick, and has outstanding mechanical strength and electronic properties.

Manchester University academics Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for demonstrating its properties.

Industrial partners

It is hoped that the material will be used in a wide array of industrial and everyday applications.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has identified the most promising graphene-related research projects in British universities to benefit from state funding.

The University of Cambridge has been awarded more than ?12m for research into graphene flexible electronics and opto-electronics, which could include things like touch-screens and other display devices.

London's Imperial College will receive over ?4.5m to investigate aerospace applications of graphene.

The other successful projects are based at Durham University, the University of Manchester, the University of Exeter and Royal Holloway.

The universities will be working with industrial partners including Nokia, BAE Systems, Procter & Gamble, Qinetiq, Rolls-Royce, Dyson, Sharp and Philips Research, which will together bring a further ?12m in investment.

House Speaker Boehner urges Senate to act on "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday urged the Senate to pass its version of legislation to avert the "fiscal cliff," in a sign that congressional efforts to avoid a budget crisis are coming back to life days ahead of the year-end deadline.

In a statement issued by Boehner and his top lieutenants, the Republican leadership team said "the Senate must act first" to revive efforts to avert the $600 billion in automatic tax hikes and spending cuts due to be triggered on January 1.

They promised that the House would weigh whatever legislation the Senate produced.

Last week, Boehner's back-up plan to keep most income tax rates low collapsed amid opposition from fellow Republicans who opposed raising taxes on those making more than $1 million a year.

The failed effort left uncertainty about what the next steps would be in avoiding the "fiscal cliff," which economists have warned could hobble the U.S. economy and lead to another recession.

The Republican leaders added that if the Senate sent the House new "fiscal cliff" legislation, "The House will then consider whether to accept the bills ... or to send them back to the Senate with additional amendments. The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass, but the Senate first must act."

"The lines of communication remain open," the leaders said, borrowing the same characterization they used for Boehner's ultimately unsuccessful talks with President Barack Obama over the past month.

The House Republican leaders argued that it was the Senate's turn to come up with a legislative solution because the House had produced two bills earlier this year to avert the "fiscal cliff." One would have continued the Bush-era's low income tax rates for another year, despite strong Democratic opposition to continuing the tax break for household incomes above $250,000.

Another bill would have replaced $109 billion in automatic spending cuts due to begin next month by stopping all of the planned military cuts and placing the entire burden on domestic activities, including some social safety net programs funded by the federal government.

Those bills were passed by House Republicans knowing they would be stopped in the Democratic-controlled Senate, which is insisting on raising tax revenues to help reduce the federal deficit.

Your Legal Rights If Your Flight Is Cancelled ? CBS Philly

By Amy E. Feldman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? What are your legal rights if your flight is cancelled?

Hurricane Sandy, dubbed Frankenstorm, caused the cancellation of about 10,000 flights across the US.

Nothing is more frustrating than a cancelled flight on your way to a vacation in paradise. Well, maybe a zombie invasion. But you probably need a force more powerful than a lawyer for that one. As for your legal rights if the flight gets cancelled though, you?d be better off fighting a zombie. Because if you get bumped off a flight because of an airline overbooking error, you may receive cash compensation or a voucher for free travel and will be rebooked on a different flight. But there?s no federal law that protects passengers in the event of what?s called a force majeure event which is an event like bad weather that?s out of the airline?s control.

Your recourse depends on your airline and what they?ve put in your contract for the ticket. Many airlines say that they will attempt to rebook you on a different flight, even on another airline, but they don?t guaranty it and while some will put you up in a hotel, most don?t pay for your extra stay because of flight cancellation so you?ll be left to find your own hotel room or sleep on the floor of the airport and you really will look and feel like a zombie when you finally arrive.

Facebook Expands Photo Functionality In Its Desktop App; Quietly Rolls Out Drag To Upload Feature

Image (1) facebooklogo3.png for post 16204Facebook last week opened a new front in the so-called photo app wars with the launch of its ephemeral photo app Poke. But Facebook's focus on apps like Poke, Camera and Instagram doesn't mean that it is has stopped enhancing the photo experience on its main social networking platform. Facebook has now implemented a new "drag to upload" feature to allow users to add photos to their status updates more easily.

Who needs church?

Churches come in all shapes and sizes ? a white-steepled Colonial nestled among Vermont maples; a cherub-packed basilica commanding a Roman boulevard; a megacampus hard by the interstate. A church can even spring up in a defunct Pizza Hut.

How and where people worship is constantly changing. Denominations may begin with a fervent few, rise to prominence, decline. Others reinvent themselves. And always there are new ones springing up. Churchgoing mirrors shifting populations and cultures. It?s like that old finger-play game of ?Here is the church; here is the steeple.? Open the doors: Some churches are empty, some full.

Nowhere is denominational churn as pronounced as in New England. Five hundred years ago, religious refugees fled there, only to establish virtual theocracies. Later came Unitarians and other theists, gospel skeptics whose open-mindedness helped frame the US Constitution. Next up were the personal-savior preachers of the first and second ?great awakenings? who fostered a populist Christianity. Then it was on to the transcendentalists with their celebration of nature and community.

Today?s New England is still a religious incubator. While it?s in the forefront of the ?unchurched? trend ? the growing numbers who see themselves as spiritually-minded but not denominational ? New England is also seeing a mushrooming of nonmainstream churches. Jeff MacDonald?s cover story in the Monitor Weekly locates that creative burst in a desire for hands-on, make-a-difference faith.

I?m sure it hasn?t escaped your notice that this publication is sponsored by a New England-born denomination that, like many, has both thriving branches and shrinking ones. I asked Margaret Rogers, one of five members of the board of directors of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, about the ebb and flow of religiousness over the decades. She observed that children often push away from the familiar and traditional as they grow up but embrace those same qualities as they mature.

Through it all, she said, there remains ?a natural yearning that never goes away,? a hunger for communion with something beyond ourselves and for community with others seeking the same thing. Perhaps that?s why the founder of the Christian Science church, Mary Baker Eddy, saw church in deeper terms than just a building or congregation, describing it as the ?structure of Truth and Love.?

In every era, churches change, but not their essential purpose. That?s important, because when we least expect it, we can suddenly wonder why we?re here and where we?re going. Church can give us a way to work that out. The great novelist of faith and family, Marilynne Robinson, in her nonfiction book ?Absence of Mind,? describes that sudden startling thought about our purpose in life as originating in the ?haunting I who wakes us in the night.? That ?I,? she notes, is surprisingly close to the biblical name for God: ?I AM.?

That ?I? can shake us awake in a soaring cathedral or call quietly in an abandoned Pizza Hut. We can hear it when mowing the lawn on a summer?s day or feel it in a crowd of shoppers on a sparkly Christmas Eve.

And after we wake up?

Maybe church ? not the building, but the essence of church ? helps us understand what to do next.

The Anatomy Of A $315,000 Per Month Online Business

I?ve talked a lot about MOBE (even offered a great MOBE bonus) in the past week, and I?ve received a ton of questions about it from readers and commentators. The main questions seems to be what is it and can it work for me?

To help answer these questions, I have an 80 minute long video of Matt Lloyd talking about MOBE from the stage of Unstoppable Entrepreneur 2. No opt in is required to watch the video. Just play and enjoy. I guarantee you?re going
to have a few epiphanies.

Matt Lloyd Speaking

I was going through the comments in the video and noticed this one from Deborah Robertson:

debroah

Deborah is in Matt?s MOBE License Rights Program. She probably would not refer to herself as an internet marketing guru. Like many people (possibly you) she?s bought a ton of internet marketing ?systems?, and has got little to zero results with any of them.

But, recently she made her first $1,000 commission from her involvement in the MOBE License Rights program and I think that is awesome because it shows that you don?t need to be like me to make money from this.

The reason why so many people have become Licensees in the last few months, is because this system symplifies the role of the parnters. To get results, you only need to do one thing: Get leads.

Here?s what it doesn?t require:

  • You building your own list, and coming up with content to email them daily
  • You creating dozens of your own products
  • You setting up blogs or websites, doing coding, or any of that ?techy? stuff
  • You hiring a team of staff, and having to manage / babysit them

Instead, you can spend that time doing the things you like. Now, am I saying that you should never do any of that stuff? Absolutely not. If you want to build a 7 figure business in this, or any other niche, then YES ? you will need to build your own list, create your own products, etc., eventually.

But for most people, being able to start making commissions TODAY, would make them happy. And it would also shut up those people around them, who keep asking, ?why are you spending all that time on the computer? Have you even made your first dollar yet??

If you?d be happy just to finally start getting real results, then you need to do what Deborah did:

  1. Become a MOBE Licensee.
  2. Claim my MOBE bonus of an Apple iPad and over $8,500 of my best products.
  3. Start driving some traffic to your MOBE links.

Increase Your brand by Partnering with MOBE

For those of you who are ready to start building your list, and branding yourself, Matt?s team have something for that too. They?ve just spent a small fortune, having their programmers create a new ?co-branding? sales funnel the MOBE Licensees can promote.

It not only allows you to build your own email list (with popular autoresponders like Aweber), but you also get to put your name and photo on the sales material, next to Matt?s, so you can be branding yourself. Here?s an example, with MOBE Licensee Samith Pich:

Co-branding with Matt Lloyd

See how his name and photo is alongside Matt?s? Every time Samith now generates a lead, he?ll also be building his own list, along with his own brand.

My point is, whatever stage you?re at, whether it?s new or experienced, the MOBE License Rights Program is better at converting traffic to dollars than any other system on the market today. That?s a bold claim, I know. However, based on my results (I made over $20K in the first month with MOBE), no other system has came close to doing what Matt?s team does.

Matt?s goal over the next 12 months is to grow his companie?s revenue from its current $2 million to $20 million. And it?s the partners like me (and possibly you) who stand to take a huge share of that.

If you?d like to know more, leave your phone number below the video, and one of Matt?s staff will call you back. They won?t try and hard sell you either. They?ll simply answer your questions, and help you determine if this is the right program for you, based on your unique circumstances. Otherwise, you can enroll in the MOBE License Rights program at the bottom of the page.

Extending My MOBE Bonus

Originally, my MOBE bonus of a free Apple iPad and over $8,500 of my best products expires after ten licenses or until the end month, which ever comes first. The ten came and went pretty quick, but I?ve decided to keep the bonus open for a few more days. To get the bonus, I recommend you get your MOBE License right now.

DIY Lettuce Knife Reduces Produce Browning

DIY Lettuce Knife Reduces Produce BrowningLettuce knives have grown in popularity over the last decade as their plastic blades do not oxidize lettuce leaves as quickly as a metal-bladed knives. If you have access to plexiglass scrap you can easily make your own unique lettuce knife that, despite the name, also is well-adapted to cutting tomatoes, cakes, and soft breads.

Instructables user MDWoodart picked up a scrap piece of plexiglass from a local hardware store for pennies-on-the-dollar. He cut out the basic knife shape as well as extra blocks for the handles. He used superglue to join the blocks to each side of the handle and clamped them in place until the glue was set and then used a belt sander to sharpen the blade. When the edge was acceptable he then polished the edge by using progressively finer sandpaper and finally polished it with a buffing wheel. He then wanted a thick handle so he added more handle scales to fit.

In the end you'll have a knife that is handy if you like salads, saved a few bucks if you found the scrap plexiglass for cheap, and can proudly say you've made your own knife.

From October 2011 to July 31, agents apprehended more than 40,000 non-Mexican migrants, compared to about 39,000 individuals from Mexico. Most of the 40,000 were from Central America.

The number of non-Mexican migrants apprehended during the same 10-month period a year earlier was about 16,000.

Rosendo Hinojosa, Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector chief, said Friday the non-Mexican migrants are coming mainly from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Hinojosa says the figures are not unheard of, as his sector traditionally has been an entry point for?illegal?immigrants?from Central America.

Experts say rising violence as well as economic conditions in various Central American countries is probably fueling the increase.

J-E-T-S went from Super Bowl contenders to M-E-S-S

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? From nearly Super to just plain stupefying.

That is what the New York Jets have become in a span of two NFL seasons.

From a botched trade for Tim Tebow before the season to a botched snap by Mark Sanchez that ended the season, Rex Ryan's bunch became a dysfunctional mess with no clear solution in sight.

The Jets are considered by many a laughingstock, one big circus which ranks up there with the Bronx Zoo Yankees, the Isiah Thomas Knicks and the late Al Davis' Raiders. At least those Yankees won a few World Series titles, and the Raiders took home three Super Bowl trophies despite all the madness.

Woody Johnson's flawed franchise could be headed for a total teardown before things get any better.

"Being in this market for six years, I've seen the ups and downs," defensive lineman Mike DeVito said. "You get used to it after a while. You see the good stuff and the bad stuff."

Lately, it's been all bad.

The Jets are a team whose owner craves attention, and gets it ? always for the wrong reasons, it seems. Two years ago, the Jets were a win away from the Super Bowl, just as they were the previous year.

Both times, they fell just short of ending the drought that began after Joe Namath delivered on his guarantee in 1969 for the franchise's first and only title.

But there was hope for the future.

Ryan was a brash and bold coach who didn't back down from anyone and said what was on his mind, predicting Super Bowl wins before the season even started, a refreshing departure from the tight-lipped three-year tenure of Eric Mangini. He had a dominant defense, led by All-Pro Darrelle Revis, and a young, promising quarterback in Sanchez.

And most of all, the Jets were winning games.

Those positive feelings all seem like a distant memory as the Jets (6-8) play out the last two games of the season and head into a winter of uncertainty with a second straight year out of the playoffs.

"If you look at it, right now, I'm not looking further than this game against San Diego and (then) we have one more game," Ryan said. "We'll see what happens. My focus has to be with those two games and that's it."

That's because Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum don't know for sure if they'll even be back beyond the final game of the season.

Tebow will be out the door less than a year after coming to New York and saying he's "excited to be a Jet." Sanchez could be a goner, too, although his hefty contract could keep him put ? but as the former face of the franchise instead of the next Namath.

Tired of getting into arguments with fans for wearing Sanchez's No. 6 jersey this season and fearing the incidents could escalate, the Jets' most famous supporter, Ed Anzalone, hung up his helmet last month and "retired" from being Fireman Ed.

So, there are no more J-E-T-S chants led by him. Still, the Jets insist they are far from the muddled M-E-S-S they are perceived by many to be.

"I certainly don't feel that," Johnson said earlier this season. "We are deadly serious about what we do here, trying to win games and trying to represent our fans in a way that they expect us to represent them."

But perception often is reality, and the Jets have provided plenty of fodder to feed into that during the past few years.

There was Ryan at his opening news conference nearly four years ago, talking about how his team would soon meet President Barack Obama as champions.

He came with plenty of other guarantees, too, that made him one of the most confident ? and as a result ? disliked sports figures New York has seen.

Most Jets fans loved his approach, though, and bought in.

They're some of the same fans who now hope for a change in leadership, tired of Ryan's empty promises and the distractions that have marked his tenure as coach.

And, there is a lengthy list: the Ines Sainz locker room incident, the foot fetish videos reportedly involving Ryan and his wife, the assistant coach who tripped an opposing player from the sideline during a play, the prime-time exposure on HBO's "Hard Knocks," to name a few.

Tannenbaum has also produced some big-time winners on draft day in his seven years as GM, including Revis, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and David Harris.

But there have also been some major duds along the way, such as Vernon Gholston and Vladimir Ducasse. All three of his picks from 2009 ? Sanchez, Shonn Greene and Matt Slauson ? could all be playing their last games as Jets.

Key locker room presences have also gradually been cut, traded or allowed to become free agents, well-respected players such as Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, Kris Jenkins, Alan Faneca, Damien Woody and LaDainian Tomlinson.

While Sanchez's ability to read defenses and adjust is one major problem, the team did little to provide him with continuity on offense with constant change in the skill players around him.

"There's been a little bit of turnover, but at the same time, you have to work with what you have," Sanchez said of the various receivers he had to work with the season.

This past offseason began with a brief flirtation with Peyton Manning, and then came the most stunning move of them all: the trade for Tebow in March. It had most people scratching their heads then and now has even the popular but little-used backup quarterback wondering why he even came here in the first place.

"I tried to make the most of every opportunity that I had," Tebow said. "I would've loved to have more."

Everyone expected more, even Ryan, who acknowledged that the Tebow-powered wildcat-style offense that was kept so under wraps in training camp up in Cortland, N.Y., never developed into what the team had hoped.

Now, the Jets will either try to trade Tebow or release him by the time the NFL's free agency period begins in March.

The lasting image of Tebow's tenure will be his shirtless jog off the practice field in the rain during training camp ? when ESPN was broadcasting live shots of Jets practice for a week.

Fans and media kept waiting all season for the quarterback controversy they were sure was to come: Sanchez vs. Tebow. Turns out, it was third-stringer Greg McElroy, a seventh-round draft pick last year, who took Sanchez's job in Week 16.

The Jets have three quarterbacks who came to the NFL with impeccable credentials: Sanchez a top-5 draft pick from Southern California, Tebow a two-time national champion at Florida and a Heisman Trophy winner, and McElroy a former Texas high school state champion who led the University of Alabama to a national title. But New York will go into this offseason not knowing if it even has its quarterback of the future on its roster.

Given everything that has gone on with the franchise, it was only fitting that a week after Braylon Edwards ? then with the Seattle Seahawks ? called out the Jets on Twitter by saying that fans should blame "the idiots calling shots" for Sanchez's struggles, he was brought back to New York by the same people he criticized.

Johnson could opt to clean house completely by firing Ryan and his coaching staff. He could do the same to Tannenbaum, or possibly re-assign him within the organization.

Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, brought in to boost the running game and get Tebow involved, could also be gone. Or, they could all be back for one more twirl.

Either way, Johnson's team is sure to consistently make splashy headlines this winter. Just the way he likes it.

Sweet Science: Making Marshmallows

Melting 'Mallows: Discover the secret to making the very best marshmallows. Image: George Retseck

Food science

Introduction
Whether you're gathered around a fire or drinking hot chocolate after a day in the snow, nothing says sweet, squishy fun quite like a marshmallow! Even its name is soft and spongy! Have you ever wondered how marshmallows are made? Long ago people made marshmallows with ingredients from the marshmallow herb, but today we usually make them with other ingredients, namely gelatin, corn syrup and sugar. In this appetizing activity you'll get to explore what ratio of sugar to corn syrup produces the best-tasting and best-textured marshmallows!

Background
Marshmallows are an unusual type of sweet treat?spongy, sticky and a little bit chewy. They have a melting point that is just above body temperature so that they start to change from a solid to a liquid state as soon as they reach the warmth of your mouth?or the heat of a fire! They're also an ancient creation, originally coming from a tall marshmallow plant (Althaea officinalis) that grows in swampy fields and has a soft, spongy root. Its root contains mucilage, a thick, gluey substance produced by some plants and microscopic animals to help with food storage and seed germination. Some cultures used the plant to make candy, whereas others used it to make medicine. The ancient Egyptians, for example, dried the root and mixed it with honey to make marshmallow treats, but the French experimented with using its gummy juice to soothe sore throats.

Modern marshmallows no longer contain parts of the marshmallow plant. Instead, the store-bought version is primarily a mix of three ingredients: sugar, corn syrup and gelatin. The gelatin replaces the thick, gluey substance from the marshmallow plant. Varying the ratio of sugar to corn syrup can significantly affect what the resultant marshmallows are like.

Materials
??? ? Timer
??? ? Two square foil cake pans or round foil pie pans each eight to nine inches wide
??? ? Masking tape
??? ? Pen or marker
??? ? Vegetable oil, such as canola or safflower oil
??? ? Paper towels
??? ? Powdered or confectioner?s sugar
??? ? Small strainer
??? ? Large mixing bowl
??? ? Measuring cups
??? ? Water
??? ? Two plain, unflavored, quarter-ounce gelatin envelopes; available at grocery stores
??? ? Fork
??? ? One half cup of corn syrup, like light corn syrup; glucose syrup is a possible substitute
??? ? One and one quarter cups of granulated sugar
??? ? Small saucepan with lid
??? ? Candy thermometer (must be able to read up to 240 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 115 degrees Celsius)
??? ? Electric mixer or beater
??? ? Measuring spoons
??? ? Pure vanilla extract
??? ? Spatula
??? ? Pizza wheel or cookie cutter approximately one-by-one inch
??? ? Ruler
??? ? Large airtight containers or gallon-size sealable plastic bags
??? ? Taste-testing volunteers (such as friends and family!)

Preparation
??? ? Wash and thoroughly rinse your hands.
??? ? Set out all cooking tools and ingredients so they are ready to go and easy to access.
??? ? Use the masking tape and a pen or marker to label the bottom of one cake pan "1" and the other "2."
??? ? Pour a small amount of vegetable oil on a paper towel and lightly oil the inside of the cake pans. Pour a small amount of powdered sugar in the strainer and lightly dust the inside of the pans.
??? ? Be careful when heating syrup mixtures in the saucepan. An adult should closely supervise these steps.

Procedure
??? ? Pour one sixth cup of cold water into the large mixing bowl. (To get one sixth cup, just fill up the one third measuring cup halfway.) Sprinkle a quarter-ounce packet of gelatin over the cold water. Mix the gelatin and water together for about five seconds with a fork and set the bowl aside. This will give the gelatin time to soften, or "bloom."
??? ? Add one quarter cup of cold water, one half cup of sugar, and one third cup of corn syrup to the saucepan. (This is a 3:2 ratio of sugar to corn syrup.)
??? ? Put the lid on the saucepan and turn the stove to medium-high heat. An adult should closely supervise all work from this point on. The syrup solution, which will become very hot, should be handled with extreme care.
??? ? Lift the lid and check the solution in the saucepan about every 30 seconds until it just comes to a boil. Remove the lid.
??? ? Begin to measure the temperature of the syrup in the saucepan using the candy thermometer. Do not let the thermometer touch the bottom or side of the pan, but instead try to put the tip below the surface, near the middle of the pan. Continue heating your syrup until the temperature reaches 240 degrees Fahrenheit (about 115 degrees Celsius). How does the temperature rise? Does it go up quickly at first? What happens as the syrup becomes more concentrated?
??? ? When the temperature reaches 240 degrees F, immediately turn off the stove and move to the next step. How does the syrup mixture seem to change as it gets closer to this temperature?
??? ? Turn the mixer on low and carefully pour the hot syrup into the large mixing bowl with the gelatin. (Some syrup will likely solidify on the saucepan.)
??? ? Set the timer for 11 minutes and start it.
??? ? Gradually increase the speed of the mixer until it is operating at full (high) speed. Continue to beat for approximately 11 minutes, or until the mixture starts to become very thick, glossy and lukewarm. How does the mixture change as you mix it?
??? ? Add one half teaspoon of vanilla extract and then beat for one more minute. Note how long you beat the syrup.
??? ? Quickly use a vegetable oil?coated spatula to scoop out the marshmallow mixture from the mixing bowl and put it into the prepared cake pan labeled 1. If needed and easy to do, use the spatula to gently smooth down the top of the marshmallow so that it is pretty flat.
??? ? Wash and dry all cooking utensils.
??? ? Repeat the entire activity procedure (not including the preparation) but this time add a three quarter cup of sugar and one sixth cup of corn syrup to the saucepan. (This is a 9:2 ratio of sugar to corn syrup.) (Still add the one quarter cup of cold water to the saucepan first.) In the mixing bowl beat this recipe for the same amount of time. When it is ready, scoop this marshmallow mixture from the mixing bowl and into the prepared cake pan labeled 2.
??? ? Allow the marshmallow "pies" to sit out, uncovered, on a counter for at least four hours (or as long as overnight) so they can become firm.
??? ? Once firm, turn the marshmallow pies over, one at a time, onto a cutting board. Use a spatula to help lift the pies out.
??? ? Roll a pizza cutter or cookie cutter into some powdered sugar and then use it to cut up your marshmallows into approximately one-by-one-inch pieces.
??? ? Dust the marshmallows on all sides with a little strained powdered sugar.
??? ? Place the marshmallows in an airtight container or plastic bag, labeling the container with the number of the recipe (1 or 2).
??? ? Within a week of making the marshmallows, take a marshmallow piece from each bag. Try to find pieces that are as similar in shape and size as possible. Drop each marshmallow in a saucepan of hot water, keeping track of which marshmallow was from each recipe. Watch and see how quickly each marshmallow piece melts. Repeat this melting test three times. Which marshmallow piece melted first?
??? ? Within a week of making the marshmallows, gather your taste-testing volunteers (such as family and friends) to evaluate the marshmallows for taste and texture. Which marshmallows do they prefer? Which ones are the chewiest and which ones are the least chewy? Which are the softest and which are the hardest? You may want to save a few pieces to do some of the "Extra" tests below.
??? ? Extra: In this activity you may have noticed that marshmallow pieces were harder from one recipe than the other. You can try to investigate this more quantitatively. To do this, put a marshmallow square from one of the recipes on a cutting board. Arrange a small cookie cutter so that it can sit on top of the square. On top of the cookie cutter balance a small plastic or paper cup. Put 20 pennies in the cup, one at a time. Did the cookie cutter leave a noticeable impression? Try this with a marshmallow square from the other recipe. Did the cookie cutter leave a more or less noticeable impression?

Scientists identify powerful infection strategy of widespread and potentially lethal virus

Scientists identify powerful infection strategy of widespread and potentially lethal virus

Friday, December 21, 2012

Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes have mapped the molecular mechanism by which a virus known as cytomegalovirus (CMV) so successfully infects its hosts. This discovery paves the way for new research avenues aimed at fighting this and other seemingly benign viruses that can turn deadly.

Not all viruses are created equal. Some ravage the body quickly, while others?after an initial infection?lie dormant for decades. CMV is one of the eight types of human herpes viruses, a family of viruses that also include Epstein-Barr virus (which causes mononucleosis) and varicella-zoster virus (which causes chickenpox), and it is one of the world's most rampant. And like other successful viruses, CMV maintains a few key features: it replicates quickly, it evades the host's immune defenses and it keeps the host cell alive just long enough to produce optimal amounts of virus. This last feature helps prevent the virus from building up to toxic levels inside a cell?an action that would kill the cell before the virus had a chance to spread to neighboring cells. To achieve this delicate balance, CMV applies a 'braking mechanism' after initial replication inside the cell. But the underlying process behind this mechanism has long eluded scientists.

Today, researchers in the laboratory of Gladstone Investigator Leor Weinberger, PhD, announce the key to CMV's success: a type of 'accelerator circuit' hidden within the virus' DNA that lets CMV reach optimal levels quickly before the host cell has time to respond?but that also stops the virus from killing the cell before those optimal levels are reached. They report their findings in the latest issue of the journal Cell, now available online.

"CMV infects between 50% and 80% of adults worldwide and can often be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy," said Dr. Weinberger, who is also an associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with which Gladstone is affiliated. "While CMV usually lies dormant, it can be dangerous or even deadly for the developing fetus or for those with compromised immune systems?such as organ-transplant recipients. As a result, we have long sought to understand exactly how CMV infects cells, in the hopes of developing treatments or a vaccine to diminish its presence around the world."

Dr. Weinberger and his team focused on a small stretch of DNA in CMV's genetic code. Known as Major Immediate-Early Promoter (MIEP), this genetic code kick-starts viral replication by generating IE2, a protein that can be extremely toxic in large quantities. And within MIEP the team discovered the real instigator of viral replication.

In a series of experiments, the team found that when MIEP is activated it not only generates IE2 and spurs replication, but it also cues the virus to stop generating the toxic IE2 protein at the precise moment when optimal levels of IE2 have been reached.

"CMV needs IE2 in order to replicate inside the host cell, but if too much IE2 is produced too quickly, the host cell will be killed before CMV has a chance to spread," said Melissa Teng, a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), a visiting UCSF graduate student and one of the paper's lead authors "But CMV gets around this problem with the so-called 'accelerator circuit,' which helps maintain optimal IE2 levels. This circuit allows CMV to replicate quickly and efficiently, infecting a range of cell types throughout the body."

To confirm these findings, the team infected human cells in dish with two forms of CMV?one of which could generate the IE2 accelerator circuit and one that could not. When they placed both viruses in the same dish, they saw a clear difference. Over time, the viruses without the accelerator circuit disappeared, while the accelerator virus quickly took over the dish. The evidence was clear?this circuit was key to the virus' success.

"This impressive work demonstrates a new mechanism for how a relatively simple genetic network can respond to external cues and create the most optimal environment for viral replication," said Gurol Suel, PhD, an associate professor of molecular biology at UCSD who was not involved in the study. "It's quite likely that mechanisms like this one exist in other biological systems, including other viruses."

"The accelerator circuit gives CMV the powerful strategic advantage to outpace immune defense systems," said Gladstone Staff Scientist Cynthia Bolovan-Fritts, PhD, the paper's other lead author. "The next step is to understand this mechanism on a deeper level and develop therapeutic approaches to target and disrupt the circuit?and hopefully stop viruses such as CMV in their tracks."

The TRUTH About Motherhood A Few of My Favorite Things: A New ...

puppy , Christmas, Sandy Hook Elementary

Our new puppy for Christmas Came home with us on December 14th.

All my girls have been really wanting for Christmas is a puppy. I am trying to think of happy things and do things that make my children happy since last Friday. Sandy Hook Elementary is just a reminder of how precious our time is and how blessed with are to have our children with us, within hugging distance. So, I am sharing for the next 3 days, 3 things I did this year, to make my children happy. These three things made them so happy? and shocked that I have to share. Today, I am sharing a gift that we got them last Friday.

We had no idea that the events that were happening in Newtown Connecticut, we only knew that our little girls have had a hard three years and they have been begging for a new puppy since we lost our sweet Saffaron in August. It?s been a really crap year for a lot of reasons and we thought they needed a special gift to make them smile and how it did. I highly suggest to anyone whose child has ever wanted a puppy to get them one. My girls are excited to see their puppy, Lola, every day when they get home form school. They feed her and get her fresh water, they play with her and she has quickly become one of the family.

Gabi, who wants so badly to be a big sister, is thrilled to be Lola?s big sister. Bella, who has been afraid of new dogs since her Grandfather?s dog nipped her when she was 2, has had no problems cuddling and loving on her own sweet puppy. Lola, our sweet Victorian Bulldog puppy, is reveling in the love and attention that she has found her self enveloped in and we are loving having her as the newest addition to our little family.

Shares, euro up on hopes of U.S. "cliff" deal, BOJ easing

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Asian shares rose and the euro hit multi-month highs on Wednesday as signs of progress in resolving the U.S. "fiscal cliff" budget crisis and expectations of more aggressive monetary stimulus from the Bank of Japan lifted riskier assets.

The gains in Asia came after Wall Street's S&P 500 <.spx> rose more than 1 percent, completing its best two-day run in a month, on growing confidence a deal can be reached in Washington to avoid a raft of painful spending cuts and tax rises due to take effect from January if there is no budget agreement. <.n/>

"What is important, and what is driving the market higher, is that the two parties are now in constructive discussions over specific tax levels and spending programs, and working towards a common middle ground," said Cameron Peacock, a strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne.

Industrial commodities such as oil and copper consolidated earlier gains, while gold recovered some lost ground but remained not far above its lowest in nearly four months as progress in the U.S. budget talks limited its safe-haven appeal.

JAPAN SHARES KEEP RISING

Tokyo's Nikkei share average <.n225> rose 1.3 percent, topping 10,000 points for the first time since April, as the Bank of Japan (BOJ) was starting a two-day policy meeting. <.t/>

The BOJ will ease monetary policy and consider adopting a 2 percent inflation target in January, double its current price goal, sources say, after pressure from the incoming prime minister, Shinzo Abe, for stronger efforts to beat deflation.

"The market is already in overbought territory, but investors are increasingly being alarmed that there is a risk of not having Japanese stocks in their portfolios," said Hiroichi Nishi, general manager at SMBC Nikko Securities.

Australian shares <.axjo> rose to a 17-month high, led by miners and banks. MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> gained 0.3 percent, while S&P 500 futures were flat.

The euro rose as far as $1.3250 on electronic trading platform EBS, its highest since the beginning of May, and against the yen it fetched 111.58, having risen as far as 111.69, its highest since late August 2011.

"Unless U.S. fiscal cliff talks take an unexpected turn for the worse, we believe that EUR/USD will meet our 1.3300 year-end target," analysts at BNP Paribas wrote in a note.

Oil held steady, with Brent crude rising a few cents to around $108.88 a barrel and U.S. crude barely changed just below $88.

"There is more upside potential for Brent because of a revival in the overall economic outlook," said Yusuke Seta, a commodities sales manager at Newedge Japan.

Copper was also flat just above $8,020 a metric ton (1.1023 tons). Copper rallied almost 8 percent from mid-November to hit a two-month high a week ago, but has since lost some ground.

Gold rose 0.3 percent to around $1,675 an ounce, after falling to $1,661.01 on Tuesday, its lowest since August.

Botany experiment will try out zero gravity aboard space station

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Gravity: It's the law in these parts. But to reach the stars, humans may have to learn to live outside the law.

"Gravity is the most pervasive thing on the planet, and it's always been there," says Simon Gilroy, University of Wisconsin-Madison botany professor. "Terrestrial biology has evolved with this constant force in the background, and when you remove it, things start to happen that you wouldn't necessarily think of."

Surprises are not welcome in space, especially surprises that interrupt the supply of vital oxygen, water and food.

For travel beyond a narrow envelope around Earth, the connection to those supplies is -- for all intents and purposes -- severed. It just takes too many resources to deliver supplementary meals and air as astronauts stray farther and farther from home.

"The only life support system we know that works really, really well is the Earth's, and that is built around plants and microbes," Gilroy says. "It's not 100 percent clear it will work, but the long-term goal is to integrate those tools into space missions: plants to grow your food and purify the air and water; microbes as the waste-processing system."

In March, Gilroy hopes to contribute a small piece of the knowledge that may support such a life-sustaining system by sending a canister full of plants to the International Space Station. Both engineered mutant and unadulterated versions of Arabidopsis -- known commonly as mouse-eared cress, and to researchers as "the lab rat of plant biology," says Gilroy -- will make the trip to study the effect of low-oxygen conditions on the plants' genes.

Without the pull of gravity, plant roots are going to have the same problem that makes a lava lamp a lot less fun in space.

"The reason is buoyancy," Gilroy says. "The goopy stuff in a lava lamp heats up, expands and gets less dense. Buoyancy moves it up in the lamp, where it cools down and sinks. And it all starts over."

Buoyancy depends on relative differences in volume and weight, and is driven by gravity. Without buoyancy, there's no convection, and on Earth convection helps mix gases in the atmosphere.

"If you were just lying on your back in the International Space Station, the gases that you're breathing out -- if there [were] no other things like fans to move the air -- would just sit there around your head," Gilroy says. "You would suffocate, because there's no mixing to replace the oxygen you use up."

Plant roots use oxygen, too. They burn it along with glucose to make energy to drive a growing plant. But the little bit of convection-driven gas mixing plants count on in Earth's soil doesn't happen in space, and the available oxygen gets used up.

For a plant, this low oxygen level is akin to what happens when a neighboring river spills its banks. Corn in a flooded field can survive a few days, but eventually the water will replace air pockets in the soil.

"Just like humans, plants suffocate and die," Gilroy says. "Plants can grow in space, but it may be that they don't grow very well. And one of the reasons is trying to cope with this oxygen depletion."

Gilroy's lab studies the way plants deal with stress, including the signals plant cells pass to one another in times of trouble -- like during a flood.

"If I flood a plant, within seconds, cells in that plant will be sending signals to other cells all over, saying, 'We need to get our act together to deal with this,'" Gilroy says.

Gilroy's lab will send Arabidopsis seeds to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule scheduled to launch in March. The seeds will germinate in space in a small container called Biological Research in a Canister (BRIC). After eight days of growth in a gravity-free environment, astronauts will stop the plants' development with a dose of a chemical fixative and tuck the whole BRIC in a deep freeze.

The entire frozen BRIC will return on the same Dragon craft it rode up, and be turned over whole to Gilroy -- who will then treat it like his firstborn child.

"As everyone who has done space shots has told us: you will never let those samples out of your sight once they're back," says Gilroy, whose experiment is funded by NASA. "They're just too valuable."

Arabidopsis grown in a NASA lab that simulates space station conditions (aside from lack of gravity) will be compared to the space plants for physical and genetic differences.

"We should be able to say this is the fingerprint of what low-oxygen looks like," Gilroy says. "We'll be able to say these plants in space look like the plants that were grown on the ground in this particular low oxygen concentration."

That will contribute to the understanding of long-term plant growth in space, and put future space travelers a hair closer to the company of plant life.

"This is that bit of the science where we're beginning to tease apart the system, beginning to understand the components that we can put together to great use," Gilroy says.
