Attorneys Offering Free Legal Help To Central Ohio Veterans ...

A call center staffed by law students has been set up at Capital University to screen calls from veterans to direct them toward free legal service.

A retired attorney formed the Ohio Military Veterans Legal Assistance Project to provide the help to low-income veterans.

Mike Renner felt the legal system should be there for men and women who have served their country, regardless of how much money they have.

"These guys out there are dying for this principle, but they themselves can't afford to be a part of it when they come home," Renner said.

Renner said the legal services can address issues like credit card debt, landlord/tenant issues, and even divorce.

Renner said local attorneys have been eager to help. He said the project's database had 35 to 40 lawyers available.

Vietnam veteran Williard Ore said he has seen a lot of former service members come into Whitehall's Veterans of Foreign Wars post who could use the help.

"We have a lot of young veterans that are coming back from the Middle East that don't have the finances," Ore said.

The legal assistance is available to veterans and active duty military personnel in Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Madison, Pickaway and Union counties.

Grants from the Columbus Foundation, the Ohio State Bar Association and the WalMart Foundation help fund the program.

Anyone seeking assistance may call 614-236-6394 or 614-752-2124.
