Risk Management: What Could Happen, Why, and When? | The ...

We?re moving from a philosophy of ?security knows best to security needs to know better about the business before it can know what to do,? said John Pironti (@jpironti), President of IP Architects, LLC.

Pironti knows best about this subject as he curated the risk management track at Interop in Las Vegas this year. In between sessions I spoke with Pironti as to what has changed over the past year with regard to risk management.

Pironti stressed the need for a data focused approach. You can?t be everywhere, doing everything, but if you can understand what could happen, why, and when, and apply metrics to it, then you can take logical approaches to understanding business impact.

Security used to get by just knowing threats. That?s not enough anymore, explained Pironti. You have to know threats, risks, the viability of them happening, and then their impacts to the business.

?If this situation was going to happen, what would it mean,? asked Pironti. How would it actually affect the business? Once you have that knowledge, and specifically data to back it up, you can build security models based on that. It?s a more symbiotic relationship that the business can embrace, not run away from.

Owning a home was considered one of the best forms of investment in the earlier days. But today most of the people are quite apprehensive about buying houses. Even though there are substantial risks associated with the purchase of homes, it can be minimized to a large extent by following some important tips.

Proper plan: It is important to have a clear and precise plan before you consider purchasing a home. Future financial status, employment status and so forth should be considered before investing in a property. Sudden loss of employment can cause changes in the lifestyle. It is pertinent to invest in properties or houses that are affordable and lasts for 10 to 15 years.

Loans with fixed interest rates: Most of banks provide home loans at attractive interest rates. It is quite necessary to avail loans from such banks so that the interest rates are comparatively low. Choose housing loans with stable interest rates so that there is less financial burden in the long run. There are a large number of private and public banks that offer housing loans at low interest rates in the country.

Home Insurance: Modern apartments and homes include insurance facilities. Home warranties will cover major sections of the building which include plumbing sections, electrical appliances, water heaters, room heaters and so forth. It is necessary to check these details with the dealer before buying house. Today majority of the houses are insured against thefts, fire accidents, leakages, electrical outages and other related issues. It is pertinent to choose such properties so that there are minimum risks involved.

Inspection: Before the purchase of a house is finalized, it is inspected. Inspectors usually pay attention to the building materials, roofs, electrical appliances, plumbing, foundation and other major domestic devices. Buyers can request for more inspection or request repairs if necessary. The inspection report will include costs to be incurred by the sellers too. So it is necessary to check the report before finalizing the purchase. Property agents or dealers are entitled to provide all the necessary information to the buyers before the deal is finalized.

Online realtor: Seek the advice and help of online realtors before choosing to buy a property or house. There are a large number of reliable realtors listed online who provide information and advice relating to new construction properties and apartments. The realtors also point out the risks associated with specific properties.

Real estate attorney: Some realtors may find it difficult to comprehend the terms and conditions of the property contracts. In that case, it is essential to review the contract with the help of a real estate attorney. Attorneys have sound knowledge related to real estate and property issues.

Buying houses are no longer difficult if all the necessary steps are taken to minimize risks. The property should be well accessed and evaluated before finalizing the deal. Moreover, as there are many reliable real estate dealers listed online, it is quite easy to avail their services.

Finding PR angles for your business

Tools for measuring angles

So you want to get in the press? But how do you pitch your story? What?s going to get a journalist interested? In the second post in her series about PR for small businesses, Julie Sherwood of Get In The Press takes a look at how you create an angle for your PR campaign.

Keeping up with the news

Another option is to keep up with trends in the news, and get in contact with the journalist offering additional statistics, a different view or findings. If an announcement has been made about new health findings, for example, can you offer a supportive view or a case study for a feature?

You can predict what will appear in the papers and magazines, too, and help yourself gain some free media exposure. For example, the recent TV series ?Call The Midwife? led to several features and interviews with birthing assistants and midwives giving their expert views on how their career had changed over the years. This was an excellent chance for people to plug their business.

More recently, the winner of ?Britain?s Got Talent?, Pudsey and Ashleigh, has sparked a media interest in dog training ? if this is your business, there?s may be an opportunity for you to get some publicity.

Another example is the recent news about the Olympics now allowing ?babes in arms? admission to the venues, as long as they are in a secure baby sling. Can you imagine the press releases from baby sling retailers that went flying out following that announcement?

If you have contacts in the press and PR world, you can almost pre-empt the news and pitch features relating to news in the press. If you engage an external PR agency, they?ll have their finger on the button and will be able to put you forward for media opportunities as soon as they arise.

Here are my tips for finding PR angles in your business:

1. Remember my golden rule: the press need you. They are always on the hunt for new sources of information, new statistics and product news.

2. Have the right contacts in the publications you?re targeting. There will be someone on the editorial staff who is relevant to your business, whether it?s a lifestyle editor, arts editor, cookery editor, books editor or shopping editor. Try Parenting Magazine Contacts for parenting and women?s lifestyle press.

3. Grab a large sheet of paper (and a glass of wine, optional) and start a spidergram of your business and potential angles you could be involved in.

For example?

Let?s say you?re a children?s swimwear retailer. What are the angles you might explore to generate publicity? I can think of three straight away:

1. When is the right age to take your baby swimming?

2. How to take precautions and ensure your baby is safe in the water.

3. How the sun can damage delicate skin and how protective beachwear can shield young children.

All the above three options give the opportunity for you to plug your business and they also position you as an expert in your field. Journalists like to know that you can be relied upon for comment or interview; using a variety of relevant angles increases your chances of being featured. But remember to keep in relevant and specialise only in your subject area.

Study: Simple scope exam cuts colon cancer deaths

A simple, cheaper exam of just the lower part of the bowel can cut the risk of developing colon cancer or dying of the disease, a large federal study finds.

Many doctors recommend a more complete test ? colonoscopy ? but many people refuse that costly, unpleasant exam. The new study shows that the simpler test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, can be a good option. Although it may seem similar to having a mammogram on just one breast, experts say that even a partial bowel exam is better than none.

As one put it, "the best test is the one that gets done."

The study was published online Monday by the New England Journal of Medicine and was to be presented at a digestive diseases conference in San Diego.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and the fourth worldwide. More than 143,000 new cases and 52,000 deaths from the disease are expected this year in the U.S. alone.

People ages 50 to 75 who are at average risk of colon cancer are urged to get screened, but only about 60 percent do. Government advisers recommend one of three methods: annual stool blood tests, a sigmoidoscopy (SIG-moy-DAH-skuh-pee) every five years plus stool tests every three years, or a colonoscopy once a decade.

In a colonoscopy, a thin tube with a tiny camera is guided through the large intestine. Growths can be removed and checked for cancer. Patients are sedated, but it requires drinking strong solutions the day before to clean out the bowel.

Sigmoidoscopy is not a popular choice in the United States but it's the one used most often in England. It also uses a thin scope and tiny camera, can be done in an ordinary doctor's office, requires much less bowel preparation and costs just $150 to $300 versus $1,000 to $2,000 for a colonoscopy.

One drawback: It's done without anesthesia. The test usually isn't painful, but patients feel cramping and some discomfort, said Dr. Durado Brooks, the American Cancer Society's colon cancer expert. It also sees only the lower one-third of the colon, "but that is an area where probably half of polyps and cancers develop," Brooks said.

The new study, led by Dr. Robert Schoen of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, tested how well it works.

From 1993 to 2001, about 155,000 people ages 55 to 75 were assigned to get the simple scope exam at the start of the study and three to five years later, or usual care ? screening by any means only if they or their doctors wanted it done. Any patients with suspicious findings were sent for a colonoscopy.

After about 12 years of follow-up, there were 21 percent fewer cases of colon cancer and 26 percent fewer deaths from the disease in the group assigned to get sigmoidoscopy.

Of the cancers in that group, 243 were considered to have been caught by sigmoidoscopy (many others were found because of symptoms or other tests). Researchers estimate that 97 more would have been detected if colonoscopy had been the main screening method instead of the simpler scope exam, said study co-leader Dr. Christine Berg, chief of early detection research at the National Cancer Institute, which sponsored the research.

"My opinion is that there's no doubt that colonoscopy would be better in detecting more total cancers," she said. "A sigmoidoscopy could be used in situations where people are afraid of having the bowel prep," or when anesthesia is a risk, she said.

In the study, about half of the group assigned to usual care wound up getting some type of scope exam anyway. That was far more than study leaders expected, and it could have diminished the true benefit sigmoidoscopy gave to the screening group, Dr. John Inadomi of the University of Washington in Seattle wrote in an editorial in the medical journal.

A patient's choice of tests must be respected, he added. "In this case, the best test is the one that gets done."

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men rally against Internet dangers

Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men attended a rally Sunday at the New York Mets' stadium on the dangers of the Internet and how to use modern technology in a religiously responsible way.

Women were not permitted to attend the meeting at Citi Field in Queens. However, it was broadcast live to audiences of women in schools and event halls in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods. The event garnered so much interest that organizers rented the nearby Arthur Ashe Stadium for the overflow crowd.

Eytan Kobre, a lawyer who is the spokesman for the event's organizers, said the rally's purpose was not to ban the Internet but to learn how to harness it.

"There is a very significant downside to the Internet," he said. "It does pose a challenge to us in various aspects of our lives."

He cited online pornography and gambling as well as the risk of social media undermining "our ability to pray uninterruptedly, to focus and to concentrate."

Television is banned or discouraged, but Kobre said many ultra-Orthodox Jews use the Internet either on computers or smartphones. "There's a spectrum of usage and there's a spectrum of how people are dealing with it," he said.

Shlomo Cohen of Toronto told The New York Times that he uses the Internet for shopping, business and staying in touch with friends, but that "desires are out there."

"We have to learn how to control ourselves," Cohen said.

The rally was organized by a rabbinical group called Ichud Hakehillos Letohar Hamachane, which means Union of Communities for the Purity of the Camp. Published reports have put the cost at $1.5 million.

The organizers are leaders of ultra-Orthodox sects that reject many aspects of modern life. Women dress modestly and wear wigs after marriage, while men wear black hats and long beards. Children are educated in Jewish schools, and Yiddish is the first language for many.

A group urging more support for the victims of child sexual abuse inside the close-knit community held a counter-protest outside the stadium.

(AP) ? Pups in her womb, a large eye visible behind the rib cage, one baby stuck in the birth canal, all fossilized in stone, modern-day evidence of how this ancient marine beast, the Ichthyosaur, died: in childbirth.

Jurassic Mom's almost certainly painful death is perfectly preserved in a rare fossil skeleton, one of the many unique items that will go on display in the Houston Museum of Natural Science's $85 million dinosaur hall when it opens to the public June 2. The Associated Press got a first peek at the exhibit as the finishing touches were put in place.

Paleontologists and scientists at the museum and the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City, S.D. have worked tirelessly for three years to collect, clean and preserve artifacts designed to give visitors a look at how life evolved beginning 25 billion years ago.

"You'll actually be able to touch a fossil that's 3.5 billion years old," Robert Bakker, the museum's curator of paleontology, says in a conspiratorial whisper. "A microbe, simpler than bacteria, which had in its DNA the kernel that would flower later on into dinosaurs, mammals, than us. That's the beginning of the safari."

His long white beard and locks bobbing with all-too-obvious excitement, Bakker raises his brows below his cowboy hat as he continues to describe the journey visitors will experience when they enter "The Prehistoric Safari," expected to be among the top six dinosaur exhibits in the United States.

Jack Horner, curator of the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Mont., who acted, along with Bakker, as an adviser on the Jurassic Park movie series, agreed there will be some unique and exclusive items on display in Houston, including Triceratops skin. But he said that to him, an object's value is determined by science and should always be peer-reviewed before being displayed.

"Anybody can have stuff," Horner said, adding that he is curious to see the scientific findings on the items displayed in Houston. "Opinions are cheap."

Bakker says the safari is designed to teach about evolution. Visitors, he explains, will experience the Cambrian explosion, when life went from "literally slime" into "beautiful, elegantly sculptured things, the trilobites, which are gorgeous."

These bizarre, insect-like creatures, which are sometimes horned or sporting antennae, roamed the Earth's seas in the Paleozoic era before the dinosaurs and were one of the most complex living things that existed to that point. At the Houston museum, visitors will be treated to one of the largest displays of trilobite fossils in the world, and Bakker rubs his hands with enthusiasm at the thought of young children pressing their nose to the glass to get a glimpse or reaching a tiny finger out to touch an impossibly old piece of rock.

"Dinosaurs are the jumper cables to the human mind. Kids can't curb their enthusiasm when they're in a hall of dinosaurs and mammoths and mammoth hunters and trilobites and giant fish that could chomp up a shark. These natural objects in motion and context make kids want to read, you can't stop them from reading and thinking," said Bakker, who in the 1970s was one of the first to argue the massive prehistoric beasts were warm-blooded and further challenged scientific thinking in his 1986 book "The Dinosaur Heresies."

For scientists, and the museum community, the exhibit offers unique objects, including the only Triceratops skin found to date, a specimen that showed they had been wrong in believing the horned vegetarians had smooth skin. In fact, it had bristles, Bakker said.

Then there is the museum's skeleton of a T. rex, one of only two with complete hands, two long fingers and one stub, which Bakker believes could be proof this massive, feared predator also had a soft side. The fingers, too small and badly configured, wouldn't have helped in hunting, or even grabbing things, leaving Bakker and other paleontologists to believe they were for tickling, fondling and even falling in love. The fossil also has a piece of its tail missing, likely because it was bitten off by another Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The hall also will house the world's only complete fossil of a snake-type creature from 50 million years ago, said David Temple, the museum's associate curator of paleontology. The snake is related to the constrictor, and the only other fossil of this type disappeared about 60 years ago.

Original sculptures, paintings and murals will depict scenes scientists and paleontologists believe occurred based on the fossil evidence, Temple said. And there are creatures native to Texas, including a Glyptodon, an Ice Age, armadillo-type creature the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, and one of the best preserved fin-backed reptiles that preceded the dinosaurs.

"This is what life was like at the beginning of natural history," Temple said.

Are You Using A Special Day As An Email Marketing Idea? | Online ...

?

If you are searching for email marketing ideas then why don?t you consider taking a rather obscure path and do something that your email list members will probably find amusing, entertaining and helpful, especially if you can weave the subject matter into the message that you are giving.

This idea centres on the use of a ?Day?. You may ask what on earth this is all about. Once you see for yourself the number of ?Days? there presently are you will no doubt start to realize that there is great potential marketing opportunities waiting to be exploited. You just need to research and decide on which ?Day? you could use to begin with.

So what is meant by the term ?Day?? There seems to be an ever growing list of a day being dedicated to something or other. Now, some of the causes are very plausible and some are just weird. The never ending list goes from Peanut Butter Lovers? Day, Plant A Flower Day, Old Stuff Day, National Frozen Food Day to Ear Muff Day and covers almost every conceivable interest you can think of.

You are probably thinking if there is a specific day that has been created for an interest you have and whether you can use such a topic as the basis of an email or series of emails. The lesson here is to undertake some research to identify whether there is a ?Day? for your particular niche. If this is that case you can take advantage and run a promotion of the ?Day? on the days leading up to it and ensuring you make a great offer only available on the day itself. The marketing opportunities are endless so you should start by writing down ideas and see what you can come up with.

If there is not a specific ?Day? available for the niche that you are involved in then either just use another one that would be of interest to your niche that you can easily incorporate into your marketing messages? You could create an email headline that is full of intrigue and just begs to be opened and then weave the story of the ?Day? into your marketing message which can include the special offer for that day only.

Though what if you find that there is no official day that has been created for the niche you are marketing to? Don?t forget that there is nothing actually to stop you just inventing a ?Day? especially for your email list members. You can create you very own special ?Day? and make special offers available including discounts on products and services, giving stuff away for free, even holding a competition. The actual limits to this type of email marketing is just your imagination!

This idea of riding on the coat tails of a specific ?Day? and weave it into your email marketing is one that most information marketers do not take full advantage of. Normally such topical marketing is centred on the main holidays of the year. By adopting this idea, your emails will be different, fresh, interesting and engaging which are the exact targets you want to hit to try and get the reader to take the action that you want.

(AP) ? Alex Ovechkin silenced the Madison Square Garden crowd that has been taunting him for two games.

If he can fire up the fans back at home, too, the Washington Capitals could be in store for a deep playoff run.

Ovechkin scored a power-play goal with 7:27 remaining to snap a tie and gave the Capitals a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers that squared the Eastern Conference semifinal series 1-1 on Monday night.

Just under 6 minutes after Ryan Callahan got the Rangers even with a power-play goal, Ovechkin put the Capitals ahead for good after they squandered a 2-0 lead.

Whether Ovechkin heard the derisive chants that greeted him every time there were 8 minutes left ? matching his uniform number ? in each period or not, they certainly didn't knock him off his game.

Despite diminished minutes in the playoffs, Ovechkin is still every bit as dangerous during crunch time.

"Ovi is a team guy and he is cheering his guys on," Capitals coach Dale Hunter said. "He knows what these guys are going through at the end of the game. They've got to go out and slide and block shots. He appreciates that.

"The one thing is that he has been real fresh for the power play."

Mike Knuble and Jason Chimera scored first-period goals for the Capitals, who will host the next two games of the series. Washington is trying to repeat its first-round feat when it lost the series opener but rallied to beat Boston in seven games. The Capitals have earned four of their five wins in this postseason on the road, but are only 1-2 at home.

"We probably weren't very fond of our home games against Boston. That's one thing that we want to improve on," goalie Braden Holtby said. "I'm very confident in our group here, and I confident that I will be there to back them up."

Brad Richards had a goal and assist, and defenseman Michael Del Zotto had two assists for the top-seeded Rangers, who got forward Brian Boyle back from a three-game injury absence but couldn't turn it into a commanding lead in the series.

New York rebounded from a 14-shot performance in its series-opening win and fired 28 shots on Holtby. But the increase in numbers produced fewer results.

Henrik Lundqvist, who allowed two goals or fewer in six of the previous eight games and four straight, made 22 saves for the Rangers. New York had won three straight games, dating to the first round against Ottawa when Boyle sustained a concussion.

New York killed a penalty against Boyle moments after Callahan's tying goal at 6:58, but Ovechkin struck off a clean faceoff win by Nicklas Backstrom during another power play. With Richards in the penalty box for holding, Ovechkin fired a shot from inside the blue line past Lundqvist.

"First I saw it, then I didn't see it, and then I saw it," Lundqvist said. "It was a hard shot. It was a good shot. Unfortunately, someone got tied up and he got a free lane. It's the wrong guy to get that opportunity."

Ovechkin was also surprised to find room to maneuver.

"Nicky wins the faceoff, and I kind of turned and felt like I was going to have some pressure," he said, "but when I turned, I saw that nobody came to me."

Agitated Rangers coach John Tortorella first lamented the numerous mistakes by his club that led to goals and then the costly late power play that decided the game.

"You fight back to tie the game as hard as we did, you can't take four minutes in penalties," Tortorella said.

The Rangers' much-maligned power play got New York into a 2-2 tie 56 seconds after Knuble was sent off for high-sticking. New York worked the puck around the Washington zone several times for drives by Del Zotto. The defenseman dropped down from the blue line to the right circle and let go a shot that worked its way through. It struck Capitals defenseman John Carlson and Callahan before getting by Holtby.

Del Zotto, who also hit the post with a shot earlier in the period, fired a drive off the crossbar in the final minute that nearly got the Rangers even again.

"He was flying out there," fellow defenseman Marc Staal said. "He was making things happen."

After a close-to-the-vest opener, the offenses busted out in the first period ? nearly matching the goal and shot totals from the Rangers' Game 1 victory. The teams combined for four goals and 32 shots, only 14 by New York, in the Rangers' 3-1 victory.

Now it's a best-of-five with three games scheduled for Washington. The Rangers also won the first-round opener against Ottawa, dropped Game 2 at home, and rallied from a 3-2 series deficit to win in seven.

The Capitals eliminated the Rangers from the playoffs last year and in 2009.

"It's going to be tough, that's for sure," Lundqvist said. "They're a good team, and we're not expecting this to be easy. It's going to be a challenge to go into their building and try to get a couple of wins."

The Capitals took their first lead of the series 12:20 in when Washington took advantage of a Rangers turnover in the offensive zone. Stu Bickel's pass was intercepted by Joel Ward at the blue line and he raced with the puck up ice. He sent a pass to the middle of the New York zone to Keith Aucoin, who quickly returned it to Ward.

Without any hesitation, Ward moved the puck to his right to Knuble, who scored his second of the playoffs into the right side of the net.

A bigger mistake directly led to Washington's second goal 4:54 later.

Shortly after Rangers rookie sensation Chris Kreider was stopped on a breakaway attempt when he left the penalty box, Washington doubled its lead.

Lundqvist went behind his net to play the puck, but gave it up when pressured by Chimera. Chimera, who scored the Capitals' lone goal in Game 1, pushed the puck in front to Matt Hendricks, who tried to score into the vacated net with his back turned to it.

Rangers defenseman Anton Stralman dove in the crease to try to block the shot, and was hit in the mouth with a stick. The puck trickled to the outside of the right post, but was banked in by Chimera off the skate of New York defenseman Ryan McDonagh to make it 2-0.

"Can't give things for free," Tortorella said. "We gave too many things for free."

Outside of New York's 2-0 loss to Ottawa in Game 5 of the first round when the Senators scored a late empty-net goal, the Rangers hadn't trailed by more than one goal in these playoffs.

Thanks to Richards' goal with 42.4 seconds left in the first period, that deficit didn't last long.

Del Zotto made a pass from the left point down to the lower right circle to Marian Gaborik, who patiently waited and then quickly made a pass left to Richards, who scored his fourth of the playoffs into the open left side before Holtby could get across to cover it.

Neither team could score in the second period, when the Rangers held an 8-6 shots advantage after they were outshot 12-10 in the first.

New York nearly tied the game less than 5 minutes into the second when a crisp passing play between Staal and Artem Anisimov got Mike Rupp free in front of Holtby. Rupp shifted from forehand to backhand and put a shot on goal that Holtby smothered.

The Capitals had a golden chance, too, when a shot by Ovechkin trickled behind Lundqvist and rolled on its edge across the crease. Lundqvist fell back on it as players from both teams converged on him.

NOTES: Chimera has scored in three straight playoff games at Madison Square Garden, including his overtime tally last year that won Game 4 of the first round for Washington. He has six career playoff goals, four against the Rangers. ... Both teams used their timeout in the second period to give players a rest following icing calls. ... Rangers coach John Tortorella was named as a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, given to the NHL coach of the year.
