White House Summit Promotes Financial Literacy

At the first White House Summit on Financial Capability and Empowerment, Visa launched a new personal finance curriculum for high school students and made a commitment to reach all of its global employees with financial education by the end of 2013.

In May, the White House convened its first ever Summit on Financial Capability & Empowerment to improve financial literacy and capability for all Americans.? Keynote speaker Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, opened the event attended by more than 100 community leaders from across the nation.

Part of the agenda featured the efforts of several organizations making a difference for workers, youth and families.? Visa?s Financial Football educational video game was highlighted, and NFL stars Matt Stafford of the Detroit Lions, and London Fletcher of the Washington Redskins, joined Administration officials and students in a lively demonstration.

The Administration also announced 14 new public- and private-sector commitments aimed at helping Americans access information and tools needed to make responsible financial decisions.

A participant in the commitments, Visa pledged to provide personal finance education resources to all of its 7,500 global employees by the end of 2013. These comprehensive financial literacy tool kits will include tutorials, interactive calculators, videos and podcasts for employees and their families, and will be accompanied by a financial education resource center on the company?s Intranet site.

In addition, the company announced the launch of its free high school personal finance curriculum, designed to help teachers educate students on a wide variety of financial education topics from budgeting to insurance. The Practical Money Skills Course?part of its Practical Money Skills for Life program?includes 22 lesson plans mapped to national financial literacy and economics standards; it?s available in print, online, and for iPads as an iTextbook.

Visa Chairman and CEO Joseph W. Saunders said, ?Ensuring Americans have the financial literacy tools they need to be successful can only happen if the private sector and government work together. The White House Summit on Financial Capability and Empowerment is a perfect example of the kind of collaboration that delivers results.?
